Best Artists Of 2013
In a year that saw the music industry crown new royals, MTV ranks the artists who ruled.
If you were too busy twerking in 2013, you may have missed a year that saw lots of really great music. In addition to welcoming back some old favorites, there were also fresh (and feisty) newcomers to the charts.
Justin Timberlake dropped two albums after taking a seven-year break from the studio, while newer acts like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Lorde slowly but surely became among the music industry's newest royals.
Global superstars like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and One Direction duked it out for pop supremacy, but in the end, they all had us dancing and roaring to their songs. Hip-hop heavyweights also had their time in the sun: Kanye West got fired up (and became a family man), while Drake just wanted to make all ladies swoon.
But it turns out 2013 was also the perfect year for artists to reinvent themselves. Bruno Mars became a 'fro-rocking sex machine and Miley Cyrus proved that she really "can't be tamed" after all.
The 10 artists who make up MTV's list this year were all ranked based on our criteria, including sales, air play, live performances, cultural impact, social impact and their general ability to keep us buzzing during the period between January 1 and December 6. Here are the Best Artists of 2013!
10. Lady Gaga
Only the Mother Monster could have given her latest album, ARTPOP, such an ambitious title. Since releasing the clap-happy #1 single, "Applause," back in August (just before taking the stage at the VMAs), we've just been trying to keep up with the jet-setting songstress. She's been Venus, a goose and even a gypsy.
Never one to rest on the success of her last great achievement, Gaga added some new players to her creative Haus, including art icons like Marina Abramovic and Jeff Koons, as well as lyrical heavyweights like T.I. and R. Kelly. But how do follow an artRave? Easy. You sell over a quarter of a million records in one week, getting grinded on by Kells and hang out with the Muppets, obviously. — Jocelyn Vena
9. Lorde
2013 was the year of the Lorde — the 17-year-old musician, that is. Lorde, a.k.a. Ella Yelich-O'Connor, has been aging like a fine wine (that she's not old enough to drink) since she signed to Universal Music at 13.
Three or so years later, she burst onto the scene with "Royals," which sat pretty at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks, and earned the singer some historical honors: She holds the record for the longest reign on the Alternative Songs chart by a lead female. Hardly a one-hit wonder, Lorde's debut record, Pure Heroine, scored the singer an avalanche of accolades. Not bad for a teen who considers herself "just a disgusting person." — Brenna Ehrlich
8. Bruno Mars
Mars rang in the year with the #1 song in the country, and then scored another chart-topper in April. He had Freida Pinto working the pole in the "Gorilla" video; won big at both the 2013 VMAs and the MTV EMA (much to the consternation of Kanye); launched a massive world tour; and picked up Grammy nominations for both Record and Song of the Year. And it was all on the strength of last year's Unorthodox Jukebox, his most audacious and artistic effort to date. To paraphrase his spiritual mentor, Frank Sinatra, in 2013, Bruno did it his way. — James Montgomery
7. Drake
If it wasn't telling enough that Kanye West made a rare (and overseas!) appearance at Drake's annual OVO Fest this summer just to praise the Toronto rapper, this fall 'Ye officially declared that "Drake season" is in full swing. Though Drizzy didn't drop his anticipated third album, Nothing Was the Same — with another major feature from Jay Z — until late September, he got the year started with "Started From the Bottom. The hit spawned a million memes and was used in many a catchphrase.
He kept things rolling with his insanely popular "wedding song," "Hold on We're Going Home," which he performed at the 2013 VMAs. Oh, and, his album went platinum in just over a month. Cheers to Drizzy. — Nadeska Alexis
6. Katy Perry
Is there anyone who didn't hear Katy Perry's roar this year? Her latest album, "Prism," debuted at #1 in October, selling 286,000 copies in its first week. And in two short months, "Roar" and "Unconditionally" have been unavoidable on the radio, with the former hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Besides the anthem "Roar" being adopted as the unofficial soundtrack of spin classes everywhere, Perry had a big year at the movies, too, including when she "blue" our minds as Smurfette in "The Smurfs 2." It's safe to say that she had an unconditionally good year. — Kase Wickman
5. One Direction
It seems like One Direction had no time for sleep in 2013. Shall we say, they were ... up all night? This year marked the thee-year anniversary of the fivesome's formation on the U.K.'s "X Factor," and to celebrate, they put out a brand-new LP, Midnight Memories, selling half a million copies in the first week of release. On top of that, they released their 3-D movie, "This Is Us," and premiered a marathon, seven-hour live stream dedicated to fans on 1D Day. They won Best Song of the Summer at the 2013 VMAs (and got to meet a naked Lady Gaga). And after being MTV's Artist of the Year in 2012, we see them dominating this list for years to come. — Emilee Lindner
4. Kanye West
This year Kanye the rapper, producer, fashion designer, added another prefix to his name: "Christian, revolutionary, visionary products person." Musically, West delivered his minimalist and experimental Yeezus album and then added to the experience with an eye-popping tour of the same name. West made a powerful impact with his "New Slaves" single and set a new standard by broadcasting the video on the sides of buildings across the world. Outside of the studio, 'Ye made major headlines, too, when he welcomed his daughter North West into the world and proposed to Kim Kardashian with a 15-karat rock. Add to all of that his recent media blitz and it's clear that Yeezy was "Bound 2" make this list. — Rob Markman
3. Justin Timberlake
JT had perfect vision in 2013. He maintained a presence in the film world with "Inside Llewyn Davis," but also conquered music once again, much to the delight of, well, everyone. He not only topped the charts — twice — with parts 1 and 2 of his comeback LP, The 20/20 Experience, he also did the unthinkable. Yep, he reunited with 'NSYNC at the VMAs, the same night he took home a Moonman or four.
Apparently, JT does almost everything in pairs though. He hit the road with bestie Jay Z this summer, and then went back out, kicking it solo with his own trek. And he did it all in Tom Ford-designed suits and ties. Not too shabby. — JV
2. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
If recent history is any indication, a song like "Thrift Shop," — what with the 6 million in U.S. sales and the six weeks at #1 and your grandma bragging about how her shawl is "so damn frosty" —, often leads to the inevitable question "that's great, but can you do it again?" Turns out, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were able to do it again (and again). The pair had their second-consecutive #1 with the infectious "Can't Hold Us"and then followed that up by providing the soundtrack to social change with their gay rights anthem "Same Love," all while playing increasingly larger stages like the 2013 VMAs. With a high-energy show, the pair cemented their reputation and their spot near the top of our list. — Gil Kaufman
1. Miley Cyrus
In hindsight, it seems ridiculous that we spent so much time focusing on the supposed "a-POP-calyptic" showdown between Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Miley came in like a Wrecking Ball, declaring her independence and dominating the pop-culture landscape. Whether it was the tongue, the twerk-tastic VMA performance or the Terry photo shoot, there's no denying there was a method to Miley's madness, the kind that could only be orchestrated by a 21-year-old who's been in the business for nearly a decade. She schooled — and shocked — us all in 2013, and did so on her own terms. All hail the new Queen of Pop.
Best Songs Of 2013
From Macklemore to Miley, Daft Punk to Drake, MTV picks the year's biggest tracks.
How weird of a year was 2013, musically? Look no further than the songs that made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100: There were only 10 of them, and they included a track released three months before the 2012 election ("Thrift Shop"), a glorified meme ("Harlem Shake"), and a single whose video featured a former Disney star licking a sledgehammer ("Wrecking Ball"). The 36-year-old son of a Canadian actor scored his first-ever #1, and so did a 16-year-old girl from New Zealand. Oh, and for you traditionalists out there, don't worry, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars once again returned to the top, too.
To make it all plain for you, we assembled the MTV editorial and music teams and asked them to rank their favorite tracks of the year, taking into consideration factors like sales, radio and video play and social media impact. We then compiled the results and came up with this Top 10: The Best Songs of 2013.
Where did your favorite song end up? Have a look.
10."I Knew You Were Trouble," Taylor Swift
Dubstep and one unforgettable bad boy defined Taylor Swift's most danceable hit to date. Taken from 2012's Grammy-nominated Red, "Trouble" is about the regret that comes with falling hard for the wrong guy. But however bad it might've hurt, the pain paid off for Swift, who worked with pop masters Max Martin and Shellback on the rave-ready single. The song climbed to #1 on the Hot 100, went platinum four times over, and spawned a VMA-winning video, where Swift (complete with pink hair) makes out with Spider-Man. Reeve Carney may have snagged Swift in his web, but the song caught everyone's attention and hasn't let us go since. — Jocelyn Vena
9."Radioactive," Imagine Dragons
Say hello to the year's biggest (and quite possibly only) rock song, a pounding, primal anthem that starts small but just keeps expanding — kind of like Imagine Dragons themselves. They're unquestionably the breakout band of 2013, and this song, which just picked up a Grammy nod for Record of the Year, was a large part of the reason why. Of course, in a very 2013 twist, it was produced by Alex da Kid, and was heard blasting out of noted rock aficionado LeBron James' headphones in a Beats by Dre commercial. Welcome to the new age, indeed. — James Montgomery
8."Clarity," Zedd
If anyone was wondering if EDM could carry over it's momentum from 2012, they need look no further than Zedd's megahit "Clarity" . The slow-build banger floats on the ethereal vocals of English singer Louisa Rose Allen (a.k.a. Foxes) and an incessant beat that kept late-night ravers bouncing all year and provided the soundtrack to festivals all summer long. Not to mention the kind of crowd-uniting, life-affirming chorus that most DJs would give their left turntable for. It all made Zedd a breakout star, who also made headlines thanks to his work on Lady Gaga's ARTPOP opus. — Gil Kaufman
7."Can't Hold Us," Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
If there was any fear that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis would become one-hit wonders after the ascent of "Thrift Shop," the boys from Seattle quickly quieted the critics when they notched their second #1 single of 2013.
"Can't Hold Us," with its boisterous church clap and uplifting Ray Dalton hook, became a sweeping anthem for underdogs everywhere. The duo performed the four-times-platinum-selling cut at the 2013 mtvU Woodie Awards and the MTV Movie Awards before taking home a Best Hip-Hop Video Moonman for the song's extravagant visual at this year's Video Music Awards. Guess that's what you get when Wu-Tang raised you. — Rob Markman
6."Started From The Bottom," Drake
You've gotta give it up for Drake — when it comes to crafting instant hip-hop anthems, few did it better than the YMCMB rapper this year. With "Started From the Bottom," Drizzy created a cultural phenomenon. Over the catchy Mike Zombie beat and a simple, yet addictive, hook he had the masses — from fans to fellow celebrities — chanting a new aspirational slogan that still shows no sign of disappearing.
Not to mention that the track was officially released just days before the Toronto native took home a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album for 2011's Take Care, and the much-lauded "Bottom" video debuted just hours before he accepted the trophy. He truly started from the bottom, and now ... — Nadeska Alexis
5."Roar," Katy Perry
After three years off, KP rolled back into the pop universe with her golden Prism semi-truck and the feisty anthem "Roar." And if her empowering jungle music video and knock-out boxing ring performance at the 2013 VMAs weren't enough to inspire, we don't know what will. Though it's been out since August, the song is still sitting in Billboard's Top 10, giving Katy's "Roar" the rarest of things: A pop song with staying power. — Emilee Lindner
4."Wrecking Ball," Miley Cyrus
Ever heard it? The video for Miley Cyrus' second Bangerz single made as much of an impact as her naughty VMA performance when she got naked and climbed atop that swinging sphere of forged steel. The parodies that followed — complete with sledge-hammer-licking and vulnerable crying — became just as famous as Miley's vid.
To date, "Wrecking Ball" has racked up more than 398 million views on YouTube, the second-most watched YT video of the year. It has also offered about a bit more emotion and reminded the world of one fact that got lost in the smoky haze of twerking and dancing with molly-- the girl can really sing. — EL
3."Get Lucky," Daft Punk
It shouldn't have resonated the way it did, not in 2013, when folks were busy bowing down to Baauer and succumbing to Miley's machinations. And yet, "Get Lucky" somehow became the biggest hit of Daft Punk's 15-year career, going toe-to-toe with "Blurred Lines" this summer, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide and making it all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Was it the rare example of taste overtaking the masses? Probably not. Instead, chalk its success up to the undeniable presence of Pharrell Williams, the sumptuous flourishes of Nile Rodgers' guitar licks, the fact that we are all, in some way, just looking to get lucky. After nearly a decade between albums, the robots returned with the gift that "keeps on giving." There's still time to send that "Thank You" card. — JM
2."Blurred Lines," Robin Thicke
"Hey hey hey!" As far as sentiments go, it's not much ... and yet, try to find a better way to sum up Robin Thicke's ubiquitous — and oddly litigious — smash, the year's best-selling (6 million copies and counting), longest-reigning (12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100) song. Some called it misogynistic, others found the video's parade of topless females problematic, and hey, they're both valid criticisms, but no one ever said "Blurred Lines" was the thinking man's anthem.
Instead, focus on that beat, those boasts, or the blissed-out cameos by Pharrell and T.I. — and try not to feel happy for Thicke, who, after a decade in the trenches, finally made it to the top of the mountain. Regardless of what happens next, he'll always have this, 2013's signature song, one that's sure to be a staple at weddings for the foreseeable future. — JM
1."Royals," Lorde
She may never be "royal," but Lorde's chart-topping single will forever be enthroned in the collective cerebral cortex of the world. Although the anti-consumerist jam debuted in 2012, it gained traction in 2013 leading up to the release of the 17-year-old singer's debut LP, Pure Heroine. The single hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and scored Lorde the longest reign on the Alternative Songs chart by a lead female. Lorde's mission statement — that "pop music doesn't have to be stupid" — not only separated her from the rest of the field, but made her a singular star (and earned her a multi-million dollar publishing deal too).We guess she can live that fantasy. — Brenna Ehrlich
Best of 2013: The Year's Top Power Couples (With Big Hearts)!
|
Photos: (Getty)
From Jesse Tyler Ferguson's wonderful wedding to lawyer Justin Mikita, to Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler's newfound romance, there are many shining duos that stand out to us. Here are eight power couples we just can't get enough of!
+ Best Rebound
John Mayer has been known to be a ladies man in the previous years, but we have to give him major props for being smart enough to steadily date Katy Perry! These two are not only both drop-dead gorgeous and talented beyond belief but they also have such big hearts! Katy Perry became UNICEF's next Goodwill Ambassador, and Johnny boy organized a benefit concert earlier this year in Livingston, Montana! We love a philanthropic couple, and hope they have many more years together! Cheers to these two!
+ Classiest Couple
One of the biggest events of the year (I'm sure you were glued to the TV!) was, hands-down, the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton's lil' peanut, Prince George. The world waiting and waited, and the baby finally arrived on July 22. Prince George couldn't have been brought into this world by two more loving people. With a father passionate about philanthropy (like when he teamed up with David Beckham to save the elephants) we are positive this new baby will grow up to be a bright individual. And then there is his beautiful mum, who seems to always be doing good deeds wherever the duchess steps foot.
+ Most Stylish
On July 20, Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson and husband Justin Mikita tied the knot in New York City. This fashionable couple has inspired us immensely throughout this year. Through their foundation, Tie the Knot, these two create unique bow ties that benefit the continued push towards equal rights. And this duo definitely walks the walk. Nearly a year ago, Jesse pushed for gay marriage in Illinois, and in November, same-sex marriage was finally recognized in the state. I can't wait to see what this power couple does in 2014! Seriously, I love them so much!
+ Mr & Mrs Claus
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have been married for five years, and they seem more in love than ever! Need further proof? Just visit their Instas, and you will fall in love with their cuteness! When Nick isn't doing his 50 other jobs (dude werks his ass off), or parenting his adorbs kids, he is most likely lending his support to help feed America! The flawless Mariah can do no wrong, and when we heard earlier this year about her racist incident, we were disgusted! Bravo to Mariah for opening up about it! #LookAtYouNowBooBoo
+ King & Queen
This may have been a given, but we have officially crowned the 2013 King and Queen as Jay Z and Beyoncé! Queen B had quite the year! From a world tour to her "Life Is But A Dream" documentary, she sure stayed busy! While their careers are at an all time high, they also fit in time to give back. Beyoncé launched the #BeyGood initiative, which is calling on fans to donate to their local Goodwill! Jay Z, on the other hand, has done FAB-U-LOUS work through his foundation, the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation, and talked about the power of music to make change in his documentary, "Made In America."
+ Couple We Hope to See on the List Next Year
Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler are def one of 2013's most talked about young Hollywood couples! Whenever out and about, these two are rarely photographed apart! Both also happen to be quite a passionate young couple when it comes to giving back. While Vanessa has recently been advocating for the support of the Philippines, her boyfriend has actively supported the fight to end sex trafficking! Last month, the couple volunteered to help Hurricane Sandy victims. Here's the adorable evidence. Could these two be any cuter? I mean, sooooo presh!
+ Class Clown
Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff are seriously, like, beyond cute together! A match made in heaven, as both are so hilar! What I love about these two is they aren't afraid to speak their minds. This year, we saw Lena speak boldly and bravely about positive body image, which is so damn important! Jack, along with his band (fun.), stood up for the LGBT community! These two make New York look so good, as do ...
+ New York’s Finest
Yep, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, hands-down, get the award for New York's finest couple! Both New York natives, these two have captured hearts across the world ever since they first started dating! Both are UBER talented and philanthropy pioneers! Giving back nearly every day of every week (or so it seems), they are giving Angelina a run for Hollywood's most philanthropic! As always, Alicia spent a lot of the year advocating for the fight against HIV/AIDS, while Swizz called on the world to unite against hate!
